Many attempt to capture the BBQ flavor in a jar or bottle, for the redistribution on food to give the BBQ effect, but the full effect is only captured when food is cooked by use of fire. Cooking with fire is a primitive concept that has evolved into an art form. The use of an open flame to prepare red meat for human consumption is only natural, and probably the best ways to capture its natural flavor. Although there are many ways to have meat prepared over fire the process of BBQ is unique, and the BBQ smokers are the tool needed to take an ordinary meal and make it a work of art.

Even though the concept is simple the method takes some different approaches. Cooking with BBQ smokers takes the food from the fire to the heat and smoke, thus giving them their name. Many approach this concept from different angles, but basically you are cooking the food indirectly. The fire box on most BBQ smokers is located separately from the cooking chamber, connected only to direct the heat and smoke to the food. By taking this approach one has greater control of the cooking process, as well of the flavoring.

The flavor of the food cooked in BBQ smokers, takes on a life of its own. The unique flavor desired may be achieved in many ways, depending on the resources available, the BBQ woods used BBQ rubs, BBQ marinade, and the cut of BBQ meat. For the better BBQ smokers it’s all about the wood, and of course the choice or cuts being cooked; rubs and marinades may be used to enhance the flavor. As you may have determined by now the smoke is derived by the burning of wood or wood products, and the cooking is done in the smoke. Flavor comes from the smoke produced by the BBQ woods used, and they come in many types. Now the flavor is determined by the type of smoke produced by the fire, and the amount of heat allowed to the food. The heat is what actually cooks the food, but to allow the food to absorb the smoky flavor the cooking must be very slow.

This act of slow cooking is where it becomes an art. Cooking the meat to slow doesn’t allow enough heat to cook it properly, and cooking to fast doesn’t allow for the flavor to soak in. There is a balancing act that takes place, and that is why the BBQ smokers have been developed to make the process more user friendly. Don’t get me wrong it is still an art, that has to be mastered to impress the BBQ lover, but with the BBQ smokers available today it is becoming easier for the backyard BBQ to get some of that flavor. Although, you could buy a BBQ smoker, you could be building a smoker BBQ it’s not that difficult if you have the plans to build a BBQ smoker.
